Comparing and Contrasting the Two Major American Political Parties

In the United States there exists largely a dichotomy with respect to parties of political affiliation, and while other parties can and do exist, most people refer to the US as it is now as a â€Å"two-party state. † The two parties, the Democratic Party and the Republican Party, have existed in our country for over one hundred fifty-three years each, and the struggle for power in which they both partake has been no small matter, becoming more and more hotly contested as time goes on.While both the Democratic Party and the Republican Party (GOP herein) seem starkly opposite at surface level, the two often have similar goals, aspirations and plans for our country, with the main point of contention being the methods by which such things are brought about. Fiscally, the Democrats and GOP both want a free economy with as little national debt as sustainably possible, but, for the most part, the Democrats favor government action, and the GOP favors private action. With respect to so cial policy, the Democrats favor more progressive legislation, and the GOP favors more traditional legislation. As the US stands currently, in a recession, no American could disagree that everyone’s goal for the economy is to get out of the recession. The real question is â€Å"How do we do it? † Republicans say that we should cut spending, cut taxes and allow those cuts in taxes to promote job creation in the private sector: jobs come from businesses, and when the people who own the businesses have more money, they can hire more people to do more work, which would raise GDP and reduce the national debt.Democrats say that we should raise taxes to increase revenue, and use the increased revenue to sponsor various economic stimuli to promote greater productivity and job creation. This sort of top-down/bottom-up perspective has led many Americans to believe the motivations of the two parties to be a conflict of social classes, with Republicans representing largely the rich , and Democrats representing largely the poor.Undoubtedly, the largest differences between the two major parties exist in the social platforms of each. The GOP is composed mostly of those who are socially conservative, the Democratic Party, of those who are socially liberal, but there are certainly those within each party whose beliefs vary. The Democratic Party generally supports legislation promoting social tolerance, i. e. policies which limit the government’s ability to tell any person what to do, provided that they not infringe upon the rights of others. This amounts to policies in favor of things gay marriage and marijuana legalization and policies opposed to abortion restrictions, welfare drugs tests and public funding of religious institutions and schools. The GOP generally supports social legislation which maintains the status quo, protecting the foundation of America which those before us have provided. In this manner, the GOP usually favors legislation that protects the sanctity of marriage (i. e. ne man, one woman), prevents drug addicts from receiving welfare and prevents people from harming themselves with drug use, and the GOP generally opposes legislation that would allow any of the previous things to occur. Interestingly, however, the GOP strongly supports the exercise of the Second Amendment to its fullest capacity, opposing almost any gun control law, while the Democrats generally favor gun control with respect to some of the more dangerously liable guns such as assault rifles or even some semi-automatic rifles. In terms of demographics and geography, the Democrats and Republicans are quite contrasting. By and large, the Republican Party is most powerful in the South and Midwest, while the Democratic Party gains its power mostly from the North and the West coast. Republicans are more likely to be older, more wealthy, more religious and white (though this obviously does not mean all Republicans are white). Democrats are more likely to be younger, more educated and more ethnically varied than the Republican Party. These snapshots into the average Democrat or the average Republican must be taken with a grain of salt, however, as demographics and geographic are not causes of the party composition, but merely correlations which have been concluded. While the Democrats and Republicans have long been considered bitter rivals, and for the most part it is true, the two major parties in America are not quite as disparate and incongruous as many would think. They both have the same major goals for the economy, but only the methodology differs. They have different ideas for social policy, stemming from the more religious and more secular worldviews which most Republicans and most Democrats respectively hold. With the differences aside from both, the Democrats and Republicans in political offices do come together to prevent the one which they fear most: the success of any third party. Both parties will stop at nothing to maintai n whatever power they each have.

Panopticism by Michel Foucault Essay

In Foucault’s Essay on Panopticism he describes how in the Seventeenth Century they began to control the spread of a plague. He begins by explaining what measures were taken to control the plague, such as quarantine and forced separation. One thing that really stood out to me is that he said everyone is locked up in his cage which makes me think of a prison but they were in there own houses. Throughout the essay he breaks down our social/economical systems and explains societies mentality on the law system. Many times his explanation is very much based off of J. Bentham’s â€Å"Panopticon†. Which in todays view we would describe as a prison. These forms of discipline were used during the plagues, which has been the support for much of the discipline that was apparent during that time. He also explains how he feels a person should be disciplined and he looks at it from many different angles. I think this is how he describes a disciplinary action and is a key model for all to follow. In disciplining that way it would make the individual a better person, â€Å"exercising power without division† is an example. Foucault’s essay is very interesting because I can relate it to our society now and how much control our government has over us. For an example the prison system, even though we aren’t quarantining people with diseases by putting them â€Å"away†. We use the system to keep a balance in the society. And in a way it keeps a lot of people in line by knowing what the consequences are of committing a crime. And I think that is what Foucault is essentially describing when he talks about the quarantine.

This is not a paper just a MIDTERM question - Essay Example However, through the Bureau of budget formed in 1970 during President Nixon’s Administration which was and is still referred to as the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). This office is the largest office in the Executive office of the President, and is mandated to advise the president on issues related to budgeting and finance, also to countercheck and oversee budget and financial management of other executive branch groups (Gibbler, 2006, p. 14). In the congressional; action process, the budgeting committee through the Congressional act of 1974 direct s that the president submits the proposed budget to the House and Senate Budget committees so that the budget resolution may be created to serve as a universal framework through which the decisions of specific government spending and tax levies would be based upon. However, they do mot make budget nor do they require president’s signature but their mandate is to establish the budget structure to avoid both misappropriation and over estimation of the US Budget. The process is mandated to lay out guideline plan for government tax and disbursement in the next fiscal year. The Budget resolution is mandated to dictate the amount of money that ne government is permitted to pay out in the 20 Budget allocations. This process is controlled by the Committee on appropriation (Gibbler, 2006, p. 38). The process is mandated to take effect after the budget is through. Through the Appropriation Bill, the process should distribute funds to the key government programs through agencies to ensure that the prospective departments receive funding as appropriated in the budget (Gibbler, 2006, p. 72). Due to the poor economic state affecting the whole world, tax rates should be reviewed so tat the country and world businesses move. Business Ethics Project - Research Paper Example As it is, the length of the material comes to three pages, though is concise and not very descriptive in nature. Therefore, I didn’t want to edit it to include references which may spoil the content. The areas which are vulnerable for unethical behavior of the employees in this industry, considering the unique features or nature of the business, should be identified and concerted strategies implemented to eliminate such problems. This aspect is very important as it concerns the business ethics as well especially in the case ADT Security Services where ‘integrity, trust and security’ is the corner stone of the business, and any unethical behavior on the part of the employees has a direct bearing on the ethical values of the company. Analysis of the problems in relation to the history of the marketing operations, in terms of customer satisfaction, system failures, complaints received, market research, product research, discontinued products lines, legal issues encountered, labor turnover related to servicing of the products, strengths and weaknesses of the competitors products, technology developments in the field, application of new technology in the development of new products, secrecy levels required to be maintained, customer profiles and needs or requirements of the customers, changes in customer behavior, brand value of the products, etc. Having evolved a strategy, measures to be taken in implementing the strategy to eliminate unethical behavior of the employees, in the light of the analysis made already, assumes greater significance, and several factors are involved in this process. However great the strategy is, inefficiency in implementation, without proper and comprehensive planning covering all facets of the business, result in failure for obvious reasons. Unethical behaviors on the part of the employees usually have financial implications only, in the case of other businesses. Misuse of funds allocated, overcharging the

Further, the strategic choice theory is also observed to generate tension relating to agency and structural elements. The relation of an agency to structure and further to the external environment makes the theory of strategic choice more dynamic and applicable to different settings. This reflects that the strategic choice theory not only serves the competing needs of the organization but also tend to depict an evolutionary approach based on external needs and changes. Strategic Choice Theory also reflects on the manner in which the business organizations gradually adapt to the changing needs to help gain needed a competitive advantage. The concept of ‘Strategic Choice’ relates to the process through which the authoritative bodi es in an organization tend to incorporate to help in taking of strategic actions.

Discussion 1 - Essay Example Indeed, the very dawn of religion is marked with the desire of a human being to understand phenomena that are though to be out of one’s comprehension. Another reason that may be quite compelling to pursuit the path of religious studies is to achieve a global perspective. Indeed, different areas of social life are affected by religion directly or indirectly. What is more important is that the above mentioned notion may also be used as an effective way to analyze the causes of conflicts. Finally, it must be noted that some of the reasons that were provided by Livingston may be reevaluated. It may be true that the former has been influencing the latter for many centuries; however, the process of secularization clearly divided these two institutions. In addition to that, one should also keep in mind that many nations that now belong to a particular religion were converted which resulted in the elimination of the previous state of social affairs. For example, Greece is often regarded as the stronghold of Orthodox Christianity. Nevertheless, for many centuries people of this country were genuine

Case Analysis Report Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 1

Analysis Report - Case Study Example With reference to the case, it is observed that GMCR has established a business venture with Starbucks for K-Cup portion package of their coffee for use in ‘Keurig Single cup brewing technology’. The key players or officers as mentioned in the case study are Howards Schultz, the President, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chairman of Starbucks Corporation, Jeff Hansberry, President of Starbucks Global Consumer Products Group, the then CEO and President of GMCR Lawrence J. Blanford and Nigel Travis, the CEO of Dunkin Brands and President of Dunkin’ Donuts among others (Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, 2009). The current CEO and President of GMCR is Brian Kelly. The company’s total sales for the year 2012 were USD 3,859,198 and the total profit was USD 1,269,399 (Yahoo! Inc., 2013). One of the major events in the GMCR’s history was in the year 2006 when GMCR made acquisition of Keurig, a maker of single-cup brewing machines. Moreover, in the year 2010, the company’s stock rose to an all time highest figure, placing it in the number one position in the Best Corporate Citizen criteria. In 2011, GMCR’s decision to enter into a venture with Starbucks was another important phase of the company (Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, 2009). ... It has a wider reach to the customers created through joint venture with the top most coffee houses in the coffee industry. It is the only manufacturer of single brewer machine (Wile, 2013). Weaknesses The main factor which may be weakness for the company is its financial performance is dependent primarily on the sales of K-Cups. Increased cost and decreased of raw materials may have keen impact on the future production of the company (Wile, 2013). Opportunities Owing to the reason that GMCR is the only manufacturer which provides single serve brewing machines and K-Cup, its brand name is getting promoted with joint ventures formed with well known companies such as Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts resulting in attraction of more companies to form a venture with them (Wile, 2013). Threats With the new trend of globalization, the world has become a much smaller place and GMCR is facing significant competition from companies manufacturing similar products (Wile, 2013). SWOT Matrix An alysis Via Porter’s Five Forces Model Porter’s five force model is a business strategy tool used to analyze the value of an industrial structure, capturing the vital rudiments of competition. Threat of new entrants GMCR is the only company which provides a wide selection of coffee products, the number of competitors competing for the same section of customers and resources is limited. Thus, threat of new entry can be deemed to be low as the company possesses exclusive offerings which can be quite hard for new competitors to imitate (Vitalsource.com, 2013). Bargaining power of buyers GMCR, being the only manufacturer of K-Cup, has a large number of buyers resulting in quite limited bargaining influence by the customers having a positive impact on the company (Vitalsource.com, 2013).

Employment Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words - 1

Employment Law - Essay Example Conformity may demand changing the equipment, circumstances, or workplace, such as hiring a sign language interpreter for deaf and mute workers, balanced with cost, feasibility, and whether modifications can be initiated to eliminate the burden to the disabled employee (Barnes et al. 1998). However, the theoretical outcome of legislation against discrimination is unclear. By providing them supplementary privileges, disabled individuals are more apt to work or provide labour. Yet greater expected expenditures may discourage employers from employing disabled workers (Oliver 1995). Without successful implementation strategies, employers will attempt to evade such additional costs. Such implementation can either be informal, such as ‘name and shame’, or formal, such as through ‘tribunals and courts’ (Massie 1994, 92). The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 created guidelines to deter discrimination against disabled individuals. It characterises a disabled individuals as an individual with mental or physical impairment which has a considerable and permanent damaging impact on his/her capacity to perform normal daily life activities (Great Britain 1995). Part II of the Act which was enforced in 1996 is grounded on the philosophy that disabled individuals should not be discriminated against in the workplace or employment or when looking for employment (Barnes et al. 1998). DDA 1995 stipulates that, as abovementioned, employers may have to undergo practical changes if their employment guidelines or workplaces situate disabled individuals at a considerable disadvantage in relation to physically able individuals (Great Britain 1995). This comprises the provision of supporting services or assistances. Nonetheless, there has been no preventative obligation to instigate these changes under the legislation. DDA 1995 initially enveloped employers with at least 15 workers (Barnes et al. 1998). Since 2004 this immunity has been

My Virtual Child Reflection Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

My Virtual Child Reflection - Essay Example My Virtual Child Reflection Genes and the environment account for the development of a human being. The two aspects are interrelated, and they affect both behavioral and physical maturation. The parent’s genes determine the limit of the child’s physical characteristics such as hair color and skin color, as well as behavioral traits. Bryan was no different, and his development was by large attributed to genetic factors. At the age of two, Bryan had some characteristics that were typical of me. Before enrolling him in a pre-school program, an early childhood specialist evaluated some of his cognitive and developmental skills. Bryan was hesitant in joining the group of children, but later integrated into the group very well. He would handle challenging tasks with ease, and his problem-solving skills were exemplary. He also gave attention to the tasks assigned by the instructor. These skills were typical to me as a parent. As stated in the personality quiz, I was not comfortable with working in groups of unfamiliar people but would enjoy with them later. I also had a strong focus on things I did and thought of them before execution. The behaviors are alike and can only be attributed to genetic factors. His first-grade report card also shows that Bryan demonstrates strength in mathematical problem solving, spatial understanding, and speaking. Environmental factors also affected Bryan’s development. At the age of 16, Bryan developed a close teen relationship with his peers. Just like his peers, he gets a girlfriend, and they experience some regular breakups.

Stanley Kubrick- A Life of Contributions to Film Essay

Stanley Kubrick- A Life of Contributions to Film - Essay Example â€Å"An awareness of contingency arises whenever there is a loss of faith in teleological explanations, in the received or discovered validity of meaning, in the rational structures of nature or the signifying power of mind and language† (Nelson, 1982.p. 13). Kubrick was not like those filmmakers who hold a mirror to nature, but rather he was one who creates his own experience. Kubrick himself said that he put forth substantial control over the final filmic product. His several films are considered major addition to generic canons like 2001: A Space Odyssey is a science fiction; The Shining is a horror film while Full Metal Jacket is on war. It seems that Kubrick texts surprisingly come and at once come to pass as part of the genre tradition, but no one can predict about his forthcoming films. Influential thematic and technical undercurrents are constantly running through each filmic text. A deep study of Kuberick’s work show that he was so absorbed with his selected s tories and themes that he constantly tried new experiments with forms and used technique that take on his audience as well as deliver meaning. (Nelson, 1982) 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)   The film was popular not only for depicting future technological developments successfully, but also for engaging a generation. This film was based on a short story, Arthur C.Clarke’s â€Å"The Sentinel,†. In this film, the director presented four parts of the â€Å"epic† connected with a central idea: the development of human intelligence. 2001: A Space Odyssey is considered different, extraordinary, and exceptional science fiction films. A Space Odyssey has enjoyed an immense popular following since it was released in theaters in 1968. Kurbrick’s notion of detail performed via the renowned edit of the gloriously thrown bone metamorphosizing into the space vehicle both sums up and projects time (Phillip, 2006) A Clockwork Orange A Clockwork Orange (1971)  left a po werful and positive impact on its audience because of the visual splendor of its special effect. The credit goes to the directors’ creative energy. A Clockwork Orange was adapted from a novel by Anthony Burgess (1962). A Clockwork Orange is a film, in which Kubrick put his artistic insights; he wrote the screenplay, controlled the shooting and did the editing (Kagan, 1972). The story of the film is in line with the novel and no significant modifications have been made. A Clockwork Orange is highly controlling film that engages the audience not only just to amuse them. To achieve this engagement of the audience, Kubrick goes through a complicated pattern of character development attracting the audience in and after that moving away from relaxed land to a new dimension. The character ‘Alex’ is a driving force for the viewer; his appearance, his voice and linking identification. The scenic cuts happen in hastily; beating an old drunk in a drain; an incredibly viciou s gang fight; playing â€Å"Hog of the Road† in the stolen Durango 95, finishing with a visit to â€Å"Home† for the rape†¦Ã¢â‚¬ surprise visit.† In addition to all this, still the ‘

Competition Bikes Inc. Storyline Essay Example for Free

Competition Bikes Inc. Storyline Essay To: Vice President The following is a summary report to recommend whether Competition Bikes should change its traditional costing method to activity based costing, and an analysis of the breakeven point with regards to sales units and dollars for both CarbonLite and Titanium bikes. It also discusses the impacts to the breakeven point. The cost-volume-profit evaluation and the traditional vs activity based costing method overhead analysis were used for the review and analysis. Traditional Based Costing vs Activity Based Costing Traditional Based Costing Method (TBC). TBC uses one rate, the overall cost of production, to estimate costs based on the revenue production created. Unlike ABC, manufacturing costs in TBC are only assigned to sold merchandises and do not account for nonmanufacturing costs such as administrative costs. This method is general not as accurate as ABC as it does not account for costs specifics to the level of products. For Competition Bikes, the company can see its manufacturing overhead is $239,020 for the Titanium bikes, and $232,380 for the CarbonLite bikes for a total of $471,400 in overhead costs. This means the unit cost for each is $713 for Titanium bikes, and $1359 for the CarbonLite bikes. Activity Based Costing Method (ABC). ABC determines and allocates cost by activities a company executes. This generally happens in four steps: identify each activity and its associated costs, both total and indirect; estimated cost driver and quantity; allocation computation; and cost allocation to the respective activity. ABC refines the way indirect costs are allocated to production and focuses on the costs of each individual activity. Costs are also further assigned to each product within the activities and each activity has its own cost driver. Because of the  specificity, active based costing provides a more accurate picture of the true costs. Direct material (DM), and direct labor (DL) are the same for each bike in using TBC or ABC. However, in using ABC, the company can break out the manufacturing overhead into factory setups, quality control, engineering services, product movements, utilities and services, and depreciation. The total for each bike using the ABC method is $590,715 for Titanium bikes, and $729,985 for CarbonLite bikes. Although the total is still the same $471,400 in overhead costs, the ABC method allows Competition Bikes to see that the Titanium bikes depreciate much faster than the CarbonLite and that it takes more utilities and services to make those bikes. Factory setups and quality control are much higher for CarbonLite bikes than those for Titanium ones. Per unit, the Titanium Bikes cost $656 each and the CarbonLite bikes cost $1460. Recommendation. It is recommended to use ABC to determine true costs associated with activities and products. This will give the company more knowledge of its finances and spending and in return by seeing a clearer picture of costs, make better decisions on funding and budget, and gain cost savings. Activity based management in Competition Bikes can use ABC to make decisions that increase profits while still meeting customer needs. Understanding where costs are going will help Competition Bikes to remove unnecessary costs and set fair price for the products. Overpricing products causes a lost in market sharing while underpricing products diminishes revenue. Better prices for consumers means more business for the company. With activity based costing, Competition Bikes will be able to determine the optimum sales units required with the sales mix of 9 Titanium bicycles produced for every 5 CarbonLite bicycles that will produce the bikes at San Diego at breakeven. The company will also be able to reevaluate activities on a regular basis to reduce future costs as well. Evaluating activities and setting sales prices are part of value engineering. Currently the company thinks it costs $1359 to make a CarbonLite bike and have set the selling price accordingly. In reality, the bikes cost $1460 to make. With a $101 difference, the company may want to adjust their selling price in future months. Using ABC also allows the company to use the Just in Time (JIT) system. This system allows ensures materials are purchased just in time to produce the products, and products are completed just in time for delivery. JIT uses the demand-pull system to receive the order, schedule production, delivered materials, and finished product delivered to the customer. This lessens the amount of excess parts and inventory saving the company money as well. Breakeven Point This analysis will evaluate the breakeven point for Competition Bikes Inc. Sales units and sales dollars will be identified for the breakeven point. These sales units and dollars will be broken down between CarbonLite and Titanium bikes. The breakeven point is used my companies to prevent loss. The Cost Volume Profit (CVP) is the tool in which to capture the breakeven point. Sometimes it is referred to as the breakeven analysis. The CVP assists the company in identifying future operation need, production costs, and expansion possibilities based on estimating costs, prices, and volumes. This profit response can help Competition Bikes determine the amount of needed sales, what products to manufacture, pricing policies, marketing strategies, and how much profit is actually needed. In this analysis we will assume that the fixed and variable costs remain constant, and that the number of units produced equals the number of units the company sells. CVP is defined by the equation Total Revenues – Total Costs = Profit. The breakeven point is the point in which the CVP equals zero or, Revenues – Expenses = 0. Meaning, the revenues cover all the costs, fixed and variable. Therefore, the CVP can be further broken down into Total Revenue – Total Fixed Costs – Total Variable Costs = Total Profit. The contribution margin is then identified by Total Revenue – Total Variable Costs (leaving out the fixed costs). Contribution Margin is important to identify the differences in each product’s profits. For Competition Bikes, the contribution margin for the Titanium bikes is $900-$679=$221. The  CarbonLite Bikes yield $1495-$1384=$111 each. Using the 450 Titanium bikes and 250 CarbonLite bikes sold, the total combined contribution margin for Competition Bikes is $127,000. That’s broken down like this: Titanium Bikes contribution margin of $221 per unit, 450 units equals $221*450, or $99,450. CarbonLite bikes contribution margin of $111 per unit, 250 units equals $27,750. Contribution margins $99,450 + $27,750 = $127,200 Total Contribution Margin. To determine the profits in more detail, we use the equation (Selling Price (per unit) * Quantity Sold) – (Variable Costs (per unit) * Quantity Sold) – Fixed Expenses = Breakeven Point (Zero). The fixed costs are the units sold * the weighted average contribution margin. The weighted average contribution margin is used to find the breakeven point and is essentially the average of contribution margin amounts per unit. The equation is Total Contribution Margin / Total Quantity Sold. For Competition Bikes, our combined weighted average contribution is $181.71. That’s $127,200/ 700 units sold (450 Titanium and 250 CarbonLite bikes) = $181.71. To establish the breakeven point, we also need to know the combined revenue and costs as well. So we calculate total revenue as the following. Titanium bikes are $900 each and 400 units sold, equals $405,000. The CarbonLite bikes are $1495 each and 250 sold which equals $373,750. Combine the $405,000 + $373,750 = $778,750 Total Combined Revenue. The variable costs for each are Titanium bikes: $679 in costs, 450 sold, which equals $305,550 or $679*450 = $305,550. CarbonLite bikes: $1384 in costs, 250 sold, which equals $346,000, or $1384*250= $346,000. The two together, $305,550 + $346,000 = $651,550 Total Combined Variable Costs. The total combined margin can also be calculated by taking $778,750 subtracting the $651,550 and it equals the same $127,200 Total Combined Margin we calculated earlier. We use this as a check and balance system here. To determine the breakeven units, we look at the fixed costs and weighted average contribution margin discussed earlier. The fixed cost for the company is $400,000. Divided by the weighted average contribution margin  181.71, we get the breakeven units for the product sales mix of 2201. The contribution margin ratio is the percentage of contribution margin to revenue. To find the contribution margin ratio, we divide the total combined margin by the total revenue. This tells us by how much the price per unit exceeds the variable cost per unit. In this scenario, Total Combined Margin $127,000 divided by Total Revenue $778,750 which is .163, or $127,000 / $778,750 = .163 Contribution Margin Ratio. Since the bikes are not equal, we must calculate a product mix in addition to the weighted average. Using the weighted average, we can calculate the breakeven point in a proportionate way using sales units and sales dollars. For sales units, we take the breakeven units for the product sales mix and multiply it by the ratio of units sold divided by the total number of unit sold. So for Titanium, the sales units at the breakeven point is [450 / 700] * 2201, or 1415 units. For CarbonLite, [250 / 700] * 2201 = 786 units. To calculate the sales dollars, we multiply the sales units by the sales price. In this instance, Titanium is 1415 units multiplied by $900 cost for each unit or, 1415 * $900 = $1,276,500. CarbonLite is 786 units multiplied by $1495 price for each unit, or 786 * $1495 = $1,175,070. The combined total sales dollars is $2,451,570 To break even, the profit must be zero. Gains and losses are equal. For Competition Bikes, the breakeven point is 1415, or $1,276,500 in Titanium bikes, and 786 CarbonLite bikes, or $1,175,070. Impacts of the Breakeven Point A2b. Based on an evaluation of cost-volume-profit, Prepare a summary report that describes the impacts to the breakeven point if company management needed to increase the cost of direct materials by 10% cost increase and needed to add $50,000 in fixed costs to the production facility. Company management has asked for a report on the impacts of increasing the  cost of direct materials by 10% and fixed costs by $50,000 in relation to the breakeven point. The contribution margin and weighted average are based in part on direct materials, or variable costs. Raising the costs by 10% is significant and will have a great impact on the company. Total Revenue is $778,750 and variable costs now $681,800. This increase is broken down by variable cost per unit to $709 for Titanium bikes, and $1551 for CarbonLite. The Contribution Margin per unit is now 191 and 44 respectively lowering the total combined contribution margin to $96,950. CarbonLite bikes contribution margin decreased from $111 to $44 per unit, over a 60% decrease. Calculated by dividing the Total Combined Contribution Margin $96,950 by the Total Units of 700, the 138.50 weighted average contribution margin per unit also dropped by 24% from 181.71. This shows how significant a 10% can be to the contribution margin. Ten percent in one area can mean much larger impact in other areas. With an increase in fixed costs to $450,000 that now brings the breakeven units for the product sales mix to 3249. We calculate this by $450,000 fixed costs divided by the lower weighed average contribution margin 138.50. This continues to affect numbers as we calculate sales units and sales dollars. Titanium bikes sales units are 450 units divided by 700 total units, multiplied by the weighted average 3249 for 2089 units. CarbonLite bike sales units are 250 units divided by the 700 total units, multiplied by the weighted average 3249, totaling 1160 sales. Sales dollars are calculated as Titanium bikes 2089 units * $900 = $1,880,100 and CarbonLite bikes as 1160 units * $1495 = $1,734,200 for a total $3,614,300. The breakeven point is now increased. Sales for Titanium bikes is now up to 2089 units, or $1,880,100 and CarbonLite bikes up to 1160 units, or $1,734,200. By raising direct costs 10% and fixed costs 13%, Competition Bikes now has to sell 674 more Titanium bikes, and 374 CarbonLite bikes to break even. That’s a 48% increase. Based on this analysis, it would be in Competition Bikes best interest to try to keep costs low. Variable and fixed costs show that a small increase can significantly impact the company’s breakeven point. Variable costs have a higher impact than fixed costs. Direct costs per unit should be specifically addressed in reducing costs as well as increasing sales.

Classroom Engagement And Management Benchmark Assessment

Classroom Engagement And Management Benchmark Assessment I will choose the environment of the middle school classroom. I will do this because I have a strong desire to teach in middle school. The theorists, Marlene and Lee Canter, shape my beliefs and values for working in education. The research on assertive discipline forms the foundation for my personal classroom management plan, which includes strategies for a preventative, supportive and corrective discipline system. I agree with the Canters, Assertive teachers clearly, confidently, and consistently model and express class expectations (Charles, 2011, pg. 73). Frankly, I agree with most of what the Canters management system. My discipline plan will be built upon this system. In addition, I will draw from ideas from Barbara Coloroso and William Glasser. With the assertive discipline system, I have identified core beliefs for creating my classroom discipline plan. The central idea in the assertive discipline model is that the teacher implements negative consequences for misbehavior and positive consequences for appropriate, or good, behavior. I strongly believe this form of discipline can be an effective way to teach students how to behave rather than telling students how they should behave. Since Canters research is so convincing, the primary part my discipline plan relies on the notion that I am able to shape my students behavior by implementing consequences. The Canters point out that for students to want to choose appropriate behavior, and cooperate with you, they need to know that you are concerned about them personally. Students feel most at ease when they are safe both personally and psychologically (McIntyre, n.d.). I believe this statement to be true, with safety is security, with security is trust. As I begin teaching, I want to learn about each student individually. I want the students to know, not through my words, but through my actions and guidance that I do care about them and do care about their successes. In order for me to do this, I have to begin on the first day by finding out something unique and positive about each student and build upon what they have shared with me. Then the student and I can establish some common ground and, this in turn will allow our student-teacher relationship to grow, therefore showing the student that I do truly care about their welfare and academic success. According to the Canters assertive discipline model, the teacher should communicate her/his displeasure to students when they exhibit bad behavior and praise them when they are behaving appropriately (Charles, 2011). Through this communication, the teacher is consistent in enforcing classroom rules and procedures. This communication allows the teacher to reinforce good behavior, which provides a model to misbehaving students that shows them how they should be acting (Charles, 2011). This plan also states that the teacher gives explicit directions to misbehaving students so they know exactly how they are expected to behave in the classroom, which is another aspect of the assertive discipline model that requires clear communication (Charles, 2011). By, establishing a clear set of consequences for misbehavior and appropriate behavior and communicating them clearly to my students is another essential aspect of my discipline plan. Another aspect of the Canters assertive discipline model that I will implement into my classroom management plan is proximity control. Proximity control is when a teacher stands physically close to a misbehaving student in order to nonverbally communicate to the student that she/he is aware of the students misbehavior (McIntyre, n.d.). This method is advantageous to the teacher because it allows the teacher to enforce classroom rules without interrupting the lesson. From my experiences working with middle school students, the proximity control method has proven to be a very effective means of establishing strong classroom management (McIntyre, n.d.). Utilizing proximity control is used quite often by many teachers because of its convenience of not interrupting the lesson by verbalizing the misbehavior to the student(s). Proximity control will be utilized in my plan as reinforcement to help shape my students behavior. Another effective aspect of the Canters assertive discipline theory is repetition is essential in shaping student behavior. For a student to behave well in the classroom, the teacher must be consistent when dealing with classroom rules and procedures (Charles, 2011). If the teacher enforces the same consequences for misbehavior each time it occurs, the student is likely to understand that the behavior must be diminish to avoid the negative consequence the next time. Repetition is essential to a strong classroom management plan. Explaining the classroom rules and procedures at the beginning of the school year guarantees that all students will understand and learn the rules and procedures. One way that is suggested by the Canters to accomplish this goal is to hold a class meeting in the first week of the school year to explain the rules and procedures (McIntyre, n.d.). After holding the class meeting, the Canters further suggest to have the students write the rules down on a piece of paper to take them home to show their parents and have their parents sign the paper, agreeing that the students should follow the rules (McIntyre, n.d.). Having the rules put in writing by the student allows them to feel that they are obligated to uphold the classroom contract they signed between themselves and the teacher. Therefore, they are able to feel responsible for following the rules. Many discipline theories are somewhat related. In this case, I feel William Glassers method can be closely linked to the Canters method. Glassers believes that it is important for the teacher to develop a strong positive relationship with the students (Charles, 2011). For this to happen, the students must trust the teacher first, and then respect will come (Charles, 2011), If there is a connection between student and teacher, the student will respond better in various discipline situations. Building a strong relationship with my students is key to my personal classroom management plan. Along with Glasser, I feel there is another relative theorist that falls in line with the Canters method Barbara Coloroso. Coloroso states that, Teachers should never treat students in ways they, the teachers, would not want to be treated (Charles, 2011, pg. 75). There are four things Coloroso references that appropriate discipline can do that punishment cannot: 1. Show students what they have done wrong, 2. Give them ownership of the problems involved, 3. Provides strategies for solving the problems, 4. Leave dignity of the student intact (Charles, 2011, pg. 75). Classroom rules should always be clearly displayed in the classroom where all students can see them and be reminded of them. The students should be able to see the rules regardless of their location in the classroom, which will eliminate some misbehavior if the students are able to see and think about the rules before braking one of them. The placement of the classroom rules is another means of effective discipline because the chance of student misbehavior can be lessened. Procedures and Routines: 1. Material Distribution: Assignments will be distributed on each students desk before the class begins, so it is ready for them to begin working on their assignments when they sit down. Positive and appropriate behavior will be recognized by the teacher to particular students by asking them to help pass out other materials during the classroom period. 2. Completed Work: Each day student work will be turned in to a tray labeled completed. Assignments that is not finished must be turned in to another tray labeled in progress any assignments in this particular tray will be available for students to work on if there is any available free time during the classroom period. 3. Recognition: Starting the first day of the school year, the teacher will place nametags on each students desk before class starts. This allows the teacher to see each students name clearly. This is a helpful tool for the teacher to get to know who each student is. 4. Signaling: The teacher will use signals to get the classrooms attention. The teacher will stand at the front of the room and raise their hand in the air. This means, that it is time to pay attention and please be quiet. With repetition, the students will learn this signal and it means time for class to start with all eyes on the teacher waiting for further instruction. 5. Attendance/Tardiness: The teacher will have a clipboard hanging on the wall next to the door that lists with each students name. As each student walks in for class, they will check off the square beside their name. This method will be used take attendance daily. Once the bell rings, the sheet of listed names will come off the clipboard, therefore, when tardy students come into the classroom, they will be unable to check their name. 6. Utensils: The pencil sharpener is available at the beginning and end of each classroom period. If a new pencil is needed during the middle of the lesson, there will be freshly sharpened pencils available at the front of the classroom where they may retrieve one quietly and return to their seats. The pencils will be replaced back into the pencil basket at the end of the class period for the next period students to use. Implementation of Classroom Management Practices: Classroom rules/expectations: The first day of school will be an informal one, where the teacher will conduct a classroom meeting. For the classroom meeting, the students and teacher will gather in a circular desk arrangement and all will discuss the classroom rules, procedures, and expectations. This is an open forum for all to discuss or address questions in regards to the rules, procedures, and expectation for the school year. The classroom rules will be achieved through collaboration from the students. Each student writes down five rules that they feel will guide them in their behavior within the classroom during the school year. The teacher will already have two set classroom rules chosen and non-negotiable. All classroom rule suggestions from the students will then be written on the whiteboard, the class will vote, the top five classroom rules chosen by majority vote will be written down with the set two teacher chosen rules, and the rules will be proudly displayed in the classroom where each student can se e them. The following day, a classroom contract will be handed out to each student to sign along with his or her parents to return to the teacher. Within the contract, the rules will be addressed as well as the consequences. Non-Negotiable Teacher Rules: 1. Be respectful a. In words b. In actions and gestures d. Do not threaten anyone 6. Be a good citizen a. Obey rules and laws in and out of the classroom b. Always do your best, the best you can c. Be a leader Curriculum/Instruction: Engaging students in instruction is essential to prevent negative behavior. The teacher will prepare lessons that will encourage questions and discussion and analysis. In doing so, the students curiosity will be piqued and allowing for them to be active in parts of the lesson so they can exert their creative, verbal, social, and sometimes physical energy during the learning process. Conclusion: To develop a preventative, supportive and corrective management style, I will establish rules and consequences with my students collaboratively the first day of school. There will be consistent review of each rule and established consequences. I will establish consequences for both negative and positive behavior. The use of these consequences will help shape students overall classroom behavior. I will be creating lesson plans that involve the whole student body and encourage them to use their mind creatively and analytically. Also, I lessons will encourage communication that will encourage each student to vocalize their thoughts throughout the lesson. I will build positive and caring relationships with each student, which will allow them to trust me to guide them for success. Furthermore, I will share my classroom management plan with the parents and school administration via a formal letter. The letter will be in explicit detail of the classroom rules, procedures, and expectations o f the classroom body as a whole.

Both holiday Inn and Marriot has other activities offering like spa, fitness center helping it to make it at the top again therefore it was correct to state that these three establishments are updating themselves with nothing less than the best in order to stay and make its place in this competitive market. TARGET MARKET: The target market of all these three establishments is upper class economy on which they are focusing immensely by providing them with all the luxuries they wish for and charging them for every facility they offer. However at some reference you will also come to notice that target market of these establishments are considered to be middle class economy which is absolutely wrong or miss understood because the price per package offered by all three establishments are beyond the affordability of any middle class family. These establishments are design for upper class or business men and are providing them with best service any hospitality organization can offer. CONCLUSION: From the data mentioned above and by discussing about the three hospitality establishment we can conclude that all three of them are providing their customers with the best service, brining new and innovative ideas in order to keep themselves ahead in hospitality industry. There packages are attractive and are economical for upper class however the one with the best offering in my opinion would be Marriot Corporation as it has all the facilities that the other two establishments have as well as other exclusive offerings as well making it superior than the other two. Second in the list would by Holiday Inn while the third position will be to Hilton among the three. However the basic facilities provided by all the three establishments are more or less same and the other exclusive offering on which we are ranking them, depends upon your affordability. Bob Gonzalezs Life and Death of Marilyn Monroe, John Everett Millais Trust Me and William Powell Friths For Better of For Worse :: Compare Contrast

Bob Gonzalez's Life and Death of Marilyn Monroe, John Everett Millais' Trust Me and William Powell Frith's For Better of For Worse Art may be considered the reflection of one's emotions or an outlet of one’s creative thought. A person can display art, not only through music or dance, but also through the creativity of a play or drama. Bob Gonzalez's Life and Death of Marilyn Monroe is a great example of creatively organizing the inner thoughts of Monroe through the theatre. He went past Monroe's glamorous facade and showed the "behind the scenes" lifestyle. In addition to dramas and plays, art may also be expressed on the canvas. John Everett Millais (1829- 1896), president of Royal Academy, did well in demonstrating his creativity with oil paints. One of his recognized works is Trust Me. Being named the most illustrious member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Millais is a well-known Victorian Artist. William Powell Frith, too, was a renowned Victorian artist. For Better of For Worse was an oil painting with a double meaning. First, one could refer the title to the marriage vows. But as one further analyzes the piece, one notices that For Better or For Worse can also refer to the gap between the upper and lower classes. All in all, the artists in each of these cases had a story to tell using certain tools to show emotion. William Powell Frith (1819- 1909), like many before him, used the tricks of the trade to simulate a certain feel in For Better or For Worse. Wardrobe and the compositional unity are tools he used to make this painting tell its story and setting. Frith, first, chose a wardrobe worthy of the Victorian Era. All the men were dressed in classic suits, either black or navy blue with a white shirt. The women, too, were covered in the time-conventional, puffy dresses. But the women’s dresses came in assorted colors, unlike the men. Hence, the wardrobe matched the aristocratic, social norm of the time. A model of the lower class’ wardrobe matched the times stereotype. For example, the father, seemingly decrepit and tired, was in a ruined suit with holes in the pants and patches on the sleeves. His wife’s dress could not compare to the wonderful dresses of the upper class women.

Financial Analysis of Agl Limited

GAL has a current ratio of less than 2 and less than PAP in 2012 meaning it does not have a satisfactory amount of current asset to cover its current liabilities. However, when it comes to 2012, both current ratio and quick ratio has a positive improvement showing GAL did not improve its short-term liquidity by stocking high level of inventory but really increased its level of cash and receivables. On the other hand, the operating cash flow ratio of GAL has reduced in 2012 meanings the decrease of ability to generate cash from operation. The increased amount of cash but decrease amount of ability to generate cash reveals that GAL increase its amount of cash by financing activities like issue of shares and borrowing. This activity makes Debt and coverage There are five ratios measuring the debt and coverage of a company. They are three debt ratios, Liabilities to Equity ratio, Debt to Equity Ratio and Capital Structure Leverage, Interest Coverage and Operating Cash Flow Ratio. All debt ratios of GAL have a sudden and great increase in 2012.It indicates that GAL increase its cash mainly by borrowing rather than issue share. This practice calling debt financing can get tax deduction which is more beneficial than equity financing. The company's interest coverage has dropped significantly discloses the decline of ability to pay interest due to the great amount of borrowing. However, when compared to PAP, the debt ratios of GAL still are not as great as that of PAP and GAL has higher interest coverage. This shows GAL is not in a very bad situation in borrowing.Efficiency The efficiency of GAL has decreased compared to last two year showing by the remover ratio such as Account Receivable, Inventory and Fixed Asset turnover. Nevertheless, the turnover rates of GAL are still greater than PAP and that of PAP are at the same time decrease. This may expose the fact that the efficiency of the industry is lower in 2012. Overall, GAL has a very poor performance in 2012. Althou gh this may be due to the low efficiency of the industry, the main reason is the low profitability of GAL together with the huge borrowing. The fact that GAL did not make the best use of the borrowing is brought to light.
